Luau Food Ideas:

Absolutely Amazing Mahi

  •
3/4 pound sashimi grade tuna steak, diced
  •
1/2 cup diced cucumber
  •
1 avocados – peeled, pitted and diced
  •
1/4 cup chopped green onion
  •
1 1/2 teaspoons red pepper flakes
  •
1 tablespoon toasted sesame seeds
  •
1 1/2 teaspoons lemon juice
  •
2 teaspoons sesame oil
  •
1/2 cup soy sauce

Directions –  In a medium bowl, combine the tuna, cucumber, avocado, green onion, red pepper flakes and sesame seeds. Pour in the lemon juice, sesame oil and soy sauce, and stir carefully to blend so as not to mash the avocado. Place this bowl into a larger bowl that has been filled with ice. Chill in the refrigerator for 15 minutes, but no longer – the terrific freshness of the fish will be lost.

Once chilled, remove the bowl from the ice, and invert onto a serving plate. Serve with toasted bread or your favorite crackers.

Tropical Salad with Pineapple Vinaigrette

  •
6 slices bacon
  •
1/4 cup pineapple juice
  •
3 tablespoons red wine vinegar
  •
1/4 cup olive oil
  •
freshly ground black pepper to taste
  •
salt to taste
  •
1 (10 ounce) package chopped romaine lettuce
  •
1 cup diced fresh pineapple
  •
1/2 cup chopped and toasted macadamia nuts
  •
3 green onions, chopped
  •
1/4 cup flaked coconut, toasted

Directions – Place bacon in a large, deep skillet. Cook over medium-high heat until evenly browned, about 10 minutes. Drain, crumble, and set aside. Combine pineapple juice, red wine vinegar, oil, pepper and salt in a lidded jar or cruet. Cover and shake well. Toss lettuce, pineapple, macadamia nuts, green onions and bacon together in a large bowl. Pour dressing over salad and toss to coat. Garnish with toasted coconut.

Hawaiian Chicken Kabobs

  •
3 tablespoons soy sauce
  •
3 tablespoons brown sugar
  •
2 tablespoons sherry
  •  1 tablespoon sesame oil
  •
1/4 teaspoon ground ginger
  •
1/4 teaspoon garlic powder
  •
8 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves – cut into 2 inch pieces
  •
1 (20 ounce) can pineapple chunks, drained
  •  skewers

Directions – In a shallow glass dish, mix the soy sauce, brown sugar, sherry, sesame oil, ginger, and garlic powder. Stir the chicken pieces and pineapple into the marinade until well coated. Cover, and marinate in the refrigerator at least 2 hours. Preheat grill to medium-high heat. Lightly oil the grill grate. Thread chicken and pineapple alternately onto skewers. Grill 15 to 20 minutes, turning occasionally, or until chicken juices run clear.

Luau Game Ideas:

PASS THE COCONUT

Like the popular game of “hot potato,” but using a coconut, have everyone sit in a circle. Play Hawaiian music or strum an ukulele while participants pass a coconut around. Stop the music and whoever is holding the coconut is “out.” Continue until there is one person left.

ʻULU MAIKA

Similar to lawn bowling, ʻulu maika is a traditional ancient Hawaiian game that requires concentration and coordination. Place two wooden or metal stakes in the ground, 6 inches apart and about 15 feet away from where the players are standing. The goal  is to roll your stone smoothly between the two stakes.

KONANE

The Hawaiian version of checkers, Konane requires two players to play. Using a wooden board (or cardboard) with 64 impressions, fill each impression with alternating black and white stones. Opponents take turns jumping over each otherʼs pieces – up, down, left or right – and removing them from the board. The person with the last jump is the winner.

HULA HOOP ʻTIL YOU DROP

Line everyone up and see who can go the longest or do the most hoops in a timed contest. For an even more challenging competition, double or triple up hula-hoops on the final two participants.

HAWAIIAN PICTIONARY

Make a list of Hawaiian places or things and write each one down on a sheet of paper, then mix them in a hat or bag. Each team assigns an artist who pulls a sheet out and draws clues for their team members to guess. They have two minutes to guess correctly or the opposing team has a chance to steal. Play up to 10 points.

HAWAIIAN LIMBO

How low can your guests go? Using a broom or any long stick, have two people on opposite ends hold the stick up at various heights, starting from high and ending with low. Play your favorite Hawaiian music while participants try their luck at this back-bending classic.

No matter how big your party is or what season, you can’t go wrong with a luau. Use these ideas or search for your own to make you luau unforgettable! The Party Place has everything you need to create the perfect luau get together, and leave your guests waiting for the next one!

Delicious Homemade Pizza

1 package (1/4 ounce) active dry yeast

1 teaspoon sugar

1-1/4 cups warm water (110° to 115°)

1/4 cup canola oil

1 teaspoon salt

3-1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1/2 pound ground turkey or beef

1 small onion, chopped

1 can (15 ounces) tomato sauce

1 medium green pepper, diced

2 cups (8 ounces) shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese

Turn onto floured surface; knead until smooth and elastic, about 2-3 minutes. Place in a greased bowl, turning once to grease the top. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled, about 45 minutes. Meanwhile, cook beef and onion over medium heat until no longer pink; drain.

Punch down dough; divide in half. Press each into a greased 12-in. pizza pan. Combine the tomato sauce, oregano and basil; spread over each crust. Top with beef mixture, green pepper and cheese.

Bake at 400° for 25-30 minutes or until crust is lightly browned. Yield: 2 pizzas (3 servings each).

Root Beer Floats by Rachel Ray

Ingredients

1 pint vanilla bean ice cream

2 quarts root beer

Directions

Hang a large, well packed scoop of vanilla ice cream on the edge of a fountain glass or other tall drinking glass. Fill the glass 3/4 full with root beer. Set the fountain glass on a salad plate, underlining the glass for overflow. Serve floats with straws and parfait spoons. When you are ready to enjoy the floats, knock the ice cream into the root beer and watch it fizz up as the ice cream floats. Yummy! This is the simplest and my most favorite fountain drink!

Cookies and Cream Popcorn

Ingredients:

1 bag kettle corn or regular white popcorn

12 Oreos, crushed finely

6 oz vanilla candy melts

Directions:

Pop bag of popcorn according to package instructions – listen to your microwave and make sure not to burn the kernels! Remove any unpopped kernels or you’ll end up with some cracked fillings – just give me a call if you forget and need those fixed Mix the popcorn and crushed Oreos together until evenly distributed. Melt candy melts in the microwave in 30 second intervals, mixing well in between until glossy and smooth. Drizzle half of the candy melts over the popcorn and use a rubber spatula to coat evenly. Add the rest of the candy melts and toss mixture gently for about a minute. Spread mixture onto a large sheet of wax paper and allow candy coating to set completely – about 20 minutes. Store in an airtight container.

Ice Cream Bar

Super simple! Just get your favorite ice creams, cones and cups, put some toppings out in bowls and don’t forget the syrup and Redi-Whip! That’s all you need! Some popular toppings are crushed Oreos, M & M’s, crushed Reese’s, gummy worms, sprinkles, cherries, nuts, white chocolate and dark chocolate chips, dried strawberries, cheesecake bites, crushed graham crackers and more!

The Party Place even has cute holders to help you perfectly display your hot dogs. You can even plan your food around the theme of the movie! No matter what the menu is, The Party Place has Movie Night themed plates, table cloths, napkins, appetizer holders, and utensils in every color imaginable to match!
